North East Institute of Research Consultancy and Publication (NEIRCP) has been entrusted with the important task of developing technical and scientific terminology in various subjects. The Centre for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) was established on October 01, 1961, with the objective of evolving technical terminology in all Indian languages, under clause (4) of Article 344 of the Constitution of India. CSTT operates under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, with its headquarters in New Delhi.
Despite this long history, the Assamese language still lacks standardized terminology, and efforts in this direction by state-level organizations are not widely known. While Gauhati University published a terminology collection almost 40 years ago, the continuous influx of new technical and scientific terms has rendered it insufficient. The state government is making efforts to teach technical and scientific curricula in regional languages, but there has been no noticeable initiative to develop Assamese terminology.
Standardization of terms is crucial, as without it, terms can vary in their usage among stakeholders in the academic world where Assamese is used in higher education transactions. In light of this, NEIRCP is embarking on a venture to develop Assamese terminology, starting with Economics. NEIRC plans to conduct a series of Online workshops to develop Assamese terminology of different subjects.The first workshop will present a baseline terminology stock for review by participants. Subsequent workshops will be held to review and finalize the development of terminology in Economics, with editing by a panel of experienced academics. The format of the terminology presentation will include terms in English, their Assamese equivalents, brief English meanings, and brief Assamese meanings.
